Our commitment to positive change
Mirvac has a long history of being a force for good, with a focus on delivering positive environmental and social outcomes. In 2014, this commitment was formalised with the launch of a group-wide sustainability strategy, This Changes Everything. The strategy is as bold as the name suggests, and since releasing it there has been a notable change in our approach to sustainability. From the way we design and manage our assets to the new technologies we’re implementing across the Group, being environmentally and socially responsible has become firmly embedded at Mirvac. As well as ensuring we’re delivering value to our securityholders, we’re continuously looking at how we can reduce our impact on the planet and affect positive change in our communities.
The time we’ve invested in embedding the strategy across our business has really paid off. Within just five years, we’ve reduced carbon and water intensity by 26% and 23% respectively, and the amount of waste diverted from landfill in our construction business rose to 96%. We’ve also applied innovative thinking to solving sustainability problems in different ways, resulting in market-leading initiatives such as Mirvac Energy and the House With No Bills.
Importantly, we also recognise that sustainability is about more than just the environment. Placing renewed emphasis on social sustainability, we prioritised important projects such as developing a Reconciliation Action Plan, building strategic charity partnerships, investing in our communities, and optimising our social return on investment.
A future-facing strategy
In June 2019, we announced a refresh of our strategy, taking our material issues from 19 to six. Our goal was to focus on the things that matter most to Mirvac and our key stakeholders, so that we can make a bigger difference in these areas. These material issues comprise climate change, natural resources, our communities, social inclusion, our people, and being a trusted partner.
Across every facet of Mirvac, we’re working to prove that businesses like ours can be a force for good, and that profit and purpose aren’t mutually exclusive.
Creating more than we take. Building better communities. Openly sharing our progress. By doing these things, we’re continuing on our path to greater sustainability, adding inclusive value to our stakeholders, and improving our business performance along the way.
