Renowned UK architect Lord Richard Rogers was in Sydney to attend the opening of 8 Chifley by Mirvac, his first completed Australian building, a striking new office tower on Elizabeth Street, Sydney.
The Lord Mayor of Sydney, Cr Clover Moore officially opened the newly finished premium grade tower, following a contemporary Indigenous ceremony to cleanse the building.
Mirvac Group CEO and Managing Director, Susan Lloyd-Hurwitz, hosted partners Keppel REIT for the dramatic ceremony in the majestic 6-storey ground floor atrium and suspended glass entrance, followed by a glittering party in the 25th floor vertical village with sweeping Sydney views.
Ms Lloyd-Hurwitz told guests the collaboration between Mirvac, Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners and Australian architects Lippmann Partnership had delivered in every aspect of this evolutionary project to provide Sydney with an internationally significant asset. She congratulated the teams that had proved global collaboration produced outstanding results with a building of the future now ready to house some of Australia’s leading firms.
“8 Chifley embodies the evolution of modern workplace design by creating collaborative, connected communities of a type not seen before in Australia. The delivery of this landmark building by Mirvac clearly demonstrates the power of our integrated delivery model,” added Ms Lloyd-Hurwitz.
RSH architect Ivan Harbour said “8 Chifley is a unique building for 21st century Sydney. Its emphasis on community, both indoors and out, from ground to roof, celebrates Australia’s passion for a balanced quality of life and the great outdoors. The building finally forms a focus to Chifley Square, drawing the public plaza up to its front door and forming a great loggia for all Sydneysiders to enjoy.”
8 Chifley is different to any building on the Sydney skyline. The 34- storey office tower embraces Rogers’ famous philosophy with its distinctive red braces and other exterior elements revealing the structural function of the building whilst creating dramatic design features.
The building is hugely efficient both environmentally and in functional space, made up of two stacked modules creating connected ‘village’ floor plates with outdoor terraces half way up and on top of the building.
Clover Moore applauded the public spaces and design features that were delivered to Sydney by ensuring developers were supported to deliver top quality and future thinking projects like 8 Chifley.
